This project was part of a course for parametric modeling and design for manufacturing. The project was divided into 3 phases:

Phase 1 -  Product Analysis: An existing screwdriver was disassembled and analyzed in small teams. Each of the students got their own screwdriver for disassembly.

Phase 2 - Design & Construction: The individual students picked a brand to design the new screwdriver for. We analyzed the brand's DNA, brand philosophy an design language and designed the screwdriver accordingly. The final design was then built in SolidWorks in consideration of real-world manufacturing requirements.

Phase 3 - Functional Design Model: In the last phase, the model was 3D-printed, painted and fully assembled with the original screwdriver components sourced in phase 1. The goal was to create a fully functional prototype.

MUJI Electric Screwdriver

The MUJI electric screw driver reflects the brand philosophy of simplicity and functionality. The soft, ergonomic shape fits well with MUJI's overall design language.

Charging

The screw driver can be charged from the port on the bottom of the handle. Three LED's indicate the charging level oof the battery.

Direction Switch

The direction of rotation can be switched or put on neutral by intuitively turning the ring on the back in the direction of the desired rotation.

CMF options

Since MUJI has a rather muted colour palette (+ the option transparent), there are solely 3 different CMF options to choose from.

Disassembly Step 1

The screwdriver is designed to be easily dismantable by the distributing company in order to make it repairable and ultimately increase the product's lifetime. This also makes it easier to divide materials and electronic components for recycling.

In the first step, a simple tool is used to push in special snap hooks and take off the three main caps. It is intended that every MUJI store that offers product repair and refurbishment has the this tool in their shop.

Disassembly Step 2

In the second step of disassembling, 3 screws have to be removed in order to fully dismantle the product. and remove all the components.
